State Board of Education Member, Ward 1
Patrick Mara was elected as Ward 1's State Board of Education Member on November 2, 2010 with 6,731 votes (52.85%). Patrick defeated incumbent member Dorothy Wade and received the endorsements from the Washington Post, the Current Newspapers, Greater Greater Washington and the New Columbia Heights blog. Patrick is a registered Republican and the State Board of Education is a non-partisan position.
A Columbia Heights homeowner, Mara is Owner of the Dolan Group, LLC. In this capacity he provides not-for-profit and other community organizations with fundraising and government relations consulting services. He previously served as Manager of Government Relations at ML Strategies, LLC, where he advocated for education, clean energy and technology interests. Mara is a past contractor at the Department of Energy and NREL where he specialized in renewable energy and green transportation projects. He began his career on the staff of the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
Mara previously served as a mentor to 9th grade students at the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Shaw and as a mentor to three different DC Public School students in the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund Program. He currently tutors a neighborhood DCPS special education student weekly through Project Northstar and sits on the Board of the Columbia Heights Day Initiative. Mara is Treasurer of One World Education, a non-profit organization focused on promoting global awareness, literacy and meaningful citizenship in DC Public Schools. He is a past board member of Hope for Kids, a group involved in providing school books and clothing for underprivileged children in DC Before earning his MBA from Babson College, Mara graduated from Marist College where he currently serves as President of the Alumni Executive Board and sits on the Board of Trustees as the alumni representative.
